Advocacy on behalf of the profession to Dalhousie University

It has been brought to the attention of the APNS Executive Committee that a position at the Dalhousie University counselling centre was being cut. As a result, the President of the Executive wrote to Tom Traves, President of Dalhousie expressing our concern. For your information the letter is available here.

Advocacy Project

15 MINUTES TO ADVOCATE FOR PSYCHOLOGY

The Advocacy Committee and APNS staff has finally completed the R&D component of our legislative advocacy project. To jog your memory, three years ago, the APNS Advocacy Committee identified a grassroots advocacy plan to enhance psychology’s political profile and influence. The plan involved linking the MLA from each of the provincial legislative ridings with one or two psychologists in each riding who would be willing to form a local advocacy contact team. Considerable effort has been devoted to compiling an information package highlighting psychology and its various contributions, especially with respect to health care. The information packages reflect both descriptively, as well as the best that psychology has to offer and will be a great primer for any stakeholder with whom we may need to educate about the discipline and to advocate on its behalf.

We plan to distribute these packages to each MLA. We will then activate our local advocacy teams to personally follow up the mail-out with a call to your MLA to locally contextualize the information and message. (That’s where the 15 minutes comes in). It is hoped that personal relationships with your elected officials will develop and that you might be called upon to offer a psychological perspective whenever relevant issues are debated legislatively. Recalling that many elected officials have little professional perspective or experience when it comes to health care, such available support from expert constituents could further the agendas of all involved.

The only missing component in this plan is YOU. The task requires minimal effort, but a little bit of chutzpah.

The preparation of the information package, the coordination of mail-outs, and recommended strategies for contacting and interacting with MLAs will all be coordinated by APNS. If you would like to participate in this important initiative, please contact APNS Advocacy Chair, David Pilon at 902-473-6285 or at djpilon@dal.ca

If you do not know your riding or MLA, please contact APNS at 902-422-9183 or at apns@apns.ca. We will require your home address to identify your riding. We look forward to hearing from YOU! Many thanks!

APNS Peer Support Program

Purpose:
The Peer Support Program is offered by APNS to psychologists as a service to members. The purpose of the program is to provide a link with psychologists willing to offer confidential support to psychologists who would like to talk with a colleague about a particular personal or professional situation or circumstance.

Process
APNS members volunteer to be placed on a Peer Support Roster each year when they renew their membership or when they become members. The Roster is listed on the APNS website Members Section and maintained by the Office Manager.

Requests for Peer Support can be made directly to a Peer Support Psychologist; after selecting him or her by going to the website to obtain contact information or by contacting the APNS Office.

Limitations
The Peer Support Program facilitates a supportive service only. It is not meant to provide psychological counselling, intervention therapy or supervision; nor is it intended to provide advice regarding ethical decision-making or advice on legal or disciplinary matters.
